Questions to Ask Before Hiring an Air Scrubber

Not every air scrubber offered for hire are equal. If you don’t know exactly what you are hiring you could be hiring an expensive fan. To make sure your the air purifier you hire will actually filter the air properly it is a good idea to ask the following questions?

Is the Air Scrubber HEPA rated?

There are portable air cleaners and air filtration systems on the market which do not filter down to HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Filtration). This means that the air will be filtered down to 3 microns at 99.7% efficiency. This is important for jobs like mould remediation where most mould spores are around 3-100 microns in size. Also for construction sites where silica and concrete dust is present. Concrete dust can be as small as 6 microns. Air filtration devices without a HEPA are only really designed for catching large particles such as dust.

How often is the primary filter checked for efficiency in filtration?

Are they checked if contaminants leak past or through the filter media? – At AGILE we check every unit with a particle meter to ensure the HEPA primary is still effective.

How often is the HEPA Pre filter replaced?

The pre-filter is designed to catch large dust particles before they pass through the HEPA primary filter. If it is not used, the pre filter will be come clogged up and non effective. At Agile we consistently replace the HEPA pre filter after every hire.

What is the True Airflow or performance of the Air scrubbers?

Unfortunately the manufacturers guidelines for performance specifications are often under ideal conditions. We have also found performance variation due to the different brands and makes of HEPA primary, carbon filters and HEPA primary filter. Also, Australia has a different electrical system to the USA which means that imported units can gain a performance loss.
So the only real way of calculating performance of these machines is by use of testing with a CFM meter to confirm the air flow performance and a particle meter to ensure filtration performance. All our units on our website project as accurate as possible to true performance of our machines.

Now you know what to ask, what should you get?

You’ve got the insider tips now, so now it comes to selecting a model. We’ve got a great selection here, with each of these machines being ones we’ve used out in the field with our own work. There are a few different sizes of scrubber depending on your needs, but they will all perform great. Alternatively, if after all this you have decided to save yourself the hassle and get some pros to do the dirty work, our friends over at NLR Water Fire Mould would love to help you solve your problems.
